Got my Song

Lizz Wright, singing Salt

God usually shows me things two to three times right in succession to make sure I get the message.  He truly knows his child. The speaker during Watch Night service (church service on new year’s eve) chose Joshua 1:1 as her focus text.  The theme of her message was “when you are standing between already and not yet — GO GET IT. She went on to say that there is a strategy for good success and that strategy starts with setting up a plan. As I listened I chuckled to myself. Earlier that day I had chosen Lizz Wright’s song “Salt” as my theme music for the year.  I interpret Lizz’s song as having a similar theme to the Watch Night sermon.  I think each of us is on the brink of something wonderful.  If we can be brave enough to give our hearts away I believe that there is a treasure there. So here is my loose plan for 2011. I say loose because while I have a plan for what I want to do, I plan with the full expectation that things will happen along the way that I can not even dream of at this moment.

2011 song: Salt

2011 word: Fearless Fearless (I wrote this word and then I crossed it out because I got afraid. Now what kind of sense does THAT make?)

2011 color: ORANGE

Creative Guide Plan for 2011:

  • become fluent in Spanish
  • clear up the last few unfinished projects from 2010 and beyond
  • book manuscript (as I look at what I wrote last year it occurs to me that I may actually have TWO books)
  • printmaking projects (blockprinting and silkscreen on textiles)
  • quilt sketches (a project I have been thinking about since May — how can I show my drawing lines in the way I piece my quilts?)
  • photo documentation of process (I do this but I want to become more detailed with it)
  • encaustic (because I love it and I never got to it last year)
  • take my doll work and figurative sculpture to the next level (yes, I have a vision for this — you will soon see)
  • continue experiment with tapestry crochet (this is new – - I blame my mother, Jerushia and Kottavei for the new yarn addiction I have, LOL)
  • Continue to build my creative community (both virtual and real)
  • Dye a broader color palette
  • Continue to enter new and different art shows

In a nutshell my goal is to keep growing and stretching and putting my work out there.  I wish the same for you. May you experience an abundance of love, laughter and ART this year. Go on and sing your song.  Peace, Deborah

In case you want to sing along with Ms. Lizz, here are the lyrics to Salt:

How can you lose your song? /When you have sung it for so long?/ How can you forget your dance, your dance/ When THAT dance is all you ever had? /It must be, it must be true You can’t SEPARATE THE TWO /Oh no, you can’t It’s impossible to do /JUST like the salt in the stew /Oh my, it’s all A part of you /One thing that life cannot do /Life can’t do it NO /It can’t take your song from you / So when life brings a chance, a chance /For you to give your part, TO give your part away /Don’t just stand there FEELING scared /Don’t be afraid /’Cause there could be a treasure right there /Now listen, listen to THE truth It does not matter, doesn’t matter what you do /Still gonna BE you Just like the salt in the stew /Yeah, it’s all A part of you /And one thing, the one thing that life cannot do /Hey, hey, hey, can’t do it NO It can´t take your song from you Life can’t take it, you DON’T give it Life can’t take it It can´t take your song from you

First, I love Lizz Wright, and that song Salt, along with Jill Scott’s Golden, started my day in my studio all year in 2008… nice! Loving your 2011 Creative Plan, I am working on something similar and am getting my self ready for a great year! Happy New Year Deborah!
